What is an MCP?
Forget the acronym for a second. An MCP server is a secure adapter that lets an AI plug into your real tools — your calendar, your documents, your database — so it can actually do work instead of just talking about it.
(The letters stand for Model Context Protocol — the industry-standard plug shape. You never need to say them again.) For your business, it is the difference between an AI that guesses about your world and one that works in it.
The picture to hold in your head
A keyring — with only the keys you choose on it.
Imagine hiring a brilliant assistant — and then locking every door in the building. They can talk to you through the wall, but they cannot check the schedule, pull a file, or look anything up. That is an AI without an adapter: smart, and locked out.
An MCP server is the keyring you hand them. Every key is labeled, you decided which doors it opens, and there is a log of every door that was used. The rooms you did not put on the ring simply do not exist to them.
